What is GEO and why does it decide your AI visibility?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is about whether AI assistants recommend your business in their answer. How it differs from SEO, and how to start.
More and more buyers no longer start their search with a list of blue links, but with a question to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity. That AI does not just list options, it judges: it weighs, recommends and refers on, usually to a handful of names. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is about whether your business is one of those names.
GEO is not the same as SEO
In classic search engine optimization (SEO) everything revolves around your position in the list of results. The user sees ten options and chooses. With GEO there is no list: there is one answer, and often only two or three providers fit inside it.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Outcome | A list of links | One composed answer |
| Room | Ten results per page | A few named names |
| Transparency | Ranking is traceable | Why a name appears is less visible |
| Speed | Changes slowly | Changes per model and per update |
The difference is not subtle. Existing in the search results is one thing; being recommended by the AI on a concrete buying question is something else entirely. We work the comparison out further in GEO vs SEO: the difference and why it matters now.
You will also run into terms like answer engine optimization (AEO) and LLM SEO. What those mean, and where they do and do not differ from GEO, is untangled in AEO vs GEO: terms explained.
Why this matters now
The buying question is visibly shifting to AI. Someone who asks an assistant "which provider is best for X?" is about to decide. The answer to that question steers the choice directly. If you are not among the names, you lose the customer before you were even in the picture.
Where GEO starts: measuring
You can only improve what you measure. A GEO audit does three things:
- Asks the questions your buyers actually ask the major AI assistants.
- Analyses the real answers for brand mentions: are you named, how, and with what sentiment?
- Shows who does appear: the competitors the AI currently recommends in your market.
Only then does the follow-up question get interesting: what does your content and positioning need in order to be named more often?
Getting started
GEO is not a trick for a quick spike. It is continuous work: measure, adjust and measure again, because the answers keep moving. But it starts with an honest picture of where you stand today.
When you want to get concrete: how to rank in ChatGPT walks through the steps that improve your odds, one by one.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO the same as SEO? No. SEO is about your position in the list of search results. GEO is about whether an AI assistant actively names and recommends you in the answer itself, where only a few names usually fit.
Can I measure my AI visibility? Yes. By asking the same buying question to several AI assistants and analysing the real answers, you can see whether and how you are mentioned, and which competitors do show up.
How long before GEO has an effect? It varies by market and by model. AI answers change faster than classic search results, so improvements can show sooner, but can also shift sooner. Measuring therefore stays continuous work.
